Tonight’s all-new episode of Fringe (“Bound”) is a major reset for the series (cocreator Roberto Orci tells me, “We call tonight the ’09 pilot“), and it sets the stage for some major revelations in the latter half of the season.

Among other things, Orci hints that there are some seriously shocking revelations in store about Olivia Dunham’s (Anna Torv) past and her connections to the Bishop family…

According to Orci, “You’ll find out that Olivia is connected to their trio in a way she didn’t know—she’s encountered Walter Bishop (John Noble) before.“

For reals? How so? Could she be Peter’s (Joshua Jackson) secret sister? Was she part of some demented Bishop experiment in the vein of Project Christmas? What’s going on here?

“Those are the right questions to be asking,” says Orci.

Fine then, until further evidence comes to light, I’m irresponsibly surmising that Olivia is Walter’s bastard love child by Nina Sharp (Blair Brown).

OK, that might be a bit much, but Orci does spill, “You’re going to have Massive Dynamic’s position in their lives change a little bit. Massive Dynamic is going to come clean with Olivia about a few things coming up, things that will make you question again whether they are of evil intent or whether there is something more going on in that company.“

Any theories on Olivia’s connection to Walter? How about Massive Dynamic’s intentions toward Olivia?

This week, during the Television Critics Association press tour, I had the chance to speak to three of the executive producers from Fringe, including J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner.

The most recent episode of Fringe was a very impressive one, bringing back plot points and characters from earlier episodes that seemed initially to be completely standalone. When I asked Abrams if that had always been the plan, he said yes and added, “I would say, you should just wait until these upcoming episodes, because that happens again and again. There are payoffs to standalones [where] you don’t have to have seen the show before, but if you’ve been watching, everything comes together.“

J.J. Abrams

J.J. Abrams, who co-created Fox’s SF series Fringe, told a group of reporters that the series is just hitting its stride in the second half of its first season.

“I think that now more than ever, the show has really found its voice,” Abrams said in a group interview Wednesday in Hollywood, Calif. “The episodes that are airing starting next week are the ones that for me are far and away the best episodes and what the show is. I feel like Fringe is a show about these crazy experiments, but in many ways Fringe is an experiment. I feel like we just found a way that the show works best. Those episodes are coming up next.“

Included in those upcoming episodes, starting Jan. 20, is a resolution to the arc of Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and John Scott (Mark Valley). Abrams warned viewers to expect more questions along with those answers.

“There’s a great resolution that’s coming out in a few episodes, but it takes a lot of loose ends and gives closure to those,” Abrams said. “Any show that is working will tell stories, resolve them; other stories will begin, and it’ll just kind of be this staggered thing. That’s where we are. So I really love the episode, and he’s fantastic in it. If you’re watching the show, it explains who he was, why he was doing what he did, why she’s been seeing him.“

Earlier in the day, Fox President of Entertainment Kevin Reilly said he was confident the network would pick up a second season of Fringe. “I’m in love with Kevin Reilly,” Abrams joked, before adding that he himself has not thought that far ahead.

“I hope that’s true,” Abrams said. “It’s sort of like being in the middle of lunch talking about dinner. It’s like the idea of a season two is spectacular. I’m sure I’ll be hungry when dinnertime comes, but I’m in the middle of lunch right now, so I just want to get through lunch.“

In the near future, Abrams is excited about the “slug gigantism” episode.

“Wait until you see this next episode,” he said. “If you’re a fan of gigantic slugs, don’t miss Fringe. That really should be the billboard.”

So who the heck is the Observer? Only Fringe’s most mysterious character.  “First off, you have to question the premise that there is only one,” says exec producer Jeff Pinkner of the figure–played by Tony-winning actor Michael Cerveris–who seems linked to the drama’s pattern mythology.

Well, whatever he is, or they are, it’s weird.  The Observer has been in every episode; jotting down notes in code, exiting elevators seconds before they crash or simply being creepy. And while we do know he rescued Walter and Peter from a freezing river after their car fell through the ice years ago (“He seems to be fine in extreme situations,” hints Pinkner), the hairless wonder’s interest in Olivia remains murky.  “He’s observing things that might not have great meaning to Olivia or to us as citizens of the planet…yet,” Pinkner says.  “He’s aware of a larger context.”

Pinkner promises fans “will learn more about [him] in upcoming episodes.”  Until then, he’ll only say the Observer’s “agenda is certainly influenced” by Walter’s experiments, both past and present.  And we’re not dealing with a time traveler.  “He’s of our time.  He just may not be of our place.”

On Tuesday, Fox’s executives deemed Fringe to be “a keeper” at the TCA press tour. A bit later, Joshua Jackson stopped by Fox’s all-star party to chat about your favorite sci fi show’s return after American Idol on Jan. 20. He didn’t spill too many secrets, but he did hint at what’s coming up in the second half of the season. Here are highlights:

On coming back for a new batch of episodes: “The idea around our set is that round two for us is really kind of like season two. The end of the 10th episode is really kind of a big cliffhanger: Olivia is left in jeopardy. So we come back just like you would at the beginning of season two, you resolve the cliffhanger, and all of the untied lines from those 10 episodes are tied up pretty quickly in the first few episodes back. And then we use that to launch us into the second set of stories. Also, we’re coming on after American Idol, which is a much larger audience, so it gives us an opportunity to kind of reintroduce the characters. Once the John Scott character is out of Olivia’s head, it opens her up to a wide variety of possibilities cause she’s literally been carrying this man with her since the beginning of the show.”

Cast of 'Fringe'

Stuart Levine of Variety.com reports:

“Fringe” and “True Blood” will take part in this year’s William S. Paley Festival.

Although the Paley Center for Media won’t announce the full lineup of shows for its popular annual fest until Feb. 18, the org said that the Fox sci-fi series from J.J. Abrams and HBO’s vampire drama from Alan Ball will be featured.

The Paley Festival, in which the cast and crew discuss their respective show or series, will take place April 10-23 at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. Tickets will go on sale to members on Feb. 26 and to the general public on March 1.

For the first time, the org will offer a festival pass that will include one guaranteed ticket for premium seating each night, access to events and after-parties, concession stand vouchers, a membership for one year and other benefits. Cost is $1,200.

The fest moved to the Cinerama Dome last year after years at the Directors Guild.
